Eastman Kodak Co.'s plans for becoming a major provider of technology for viewing digital images, video, words and other data are quietly growing in scope. Rochester's largest employer has introduced several new projects that apply the company's knowledge of imaging, optics and color science to electronic screens for displaying information in a variety of forms. Those initiatives include a cutting-edge system that shows three-dimensional images without glasses or other headgear; screens for consumer electronics made on flexible sheets of film, instead of glass; and components for laser projection televisions and related products. The projects, which are at different stages of development, join Kodak's pioneering work in next-generation screens for cellular telephones, personal digital assistants and other consumer electronics. Kodak researchers invented organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, technology, which produces screens with sharper colors and more consistent viewing angles. More than 100 companies are now doing research in OLED technology."
It seems about every couple months we hear about Kodak reinventing itself, but if they can move some of this lab technology into consumers hands they can move beyond their Disc Cameras. I for one would love to be able to have a computer screen that could be folded up like a map and put into my pocket. Can you imagine that? 8)
