Next iPod To Offer Better Battery Life

It seems greener pastures are just around the corner for iPod users who crave greater battery longevity. PortaPlayer, the company that manufactures the chipsets which power nearly every iPod flavor, is announcing a major new chipset called the PP5022. What's so hot about this new chipset, you ask? Well, according the company, it gets nearly triple (yes I said triple) the battery of a hard drive based player running the older PP5020 chipset. That got your attention, eh?
Obviously this claim will need to be put to the test in real world applications; namely an iPod, before we fall on our knees in worship to the engineering Gods at PortalPlayer. But if the product lives up to claims, this is going to be big. Very big indeed. Now for the bad news. We likely won't see iPods shipping with these new chips until the fall quarter. Bummer.
