"The best way for me to describe it is this: think Macromedia’s Flash for Windows and web user interface programming. It is a layer added on top of such technologies as DirectX (3D rendering and transformations), .NET, and the current GDI and GDI+. To be honest, other than the existing support and tool preference, it looks like Avalon could easily and completely make Flash redundant. It can be used in a standard EXE or on the web and allows the development of rich user interface elements. Avalon will be supported in nothing lower than Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003."
Avalon is a very interesting technology, and this is one of the better articles I've seen that explains it. The potential here is that we'll see some very interesting digital media applications with 3D user interfaces. I'm less interested in editing videos in this interface than I am in an application that could crank out 3D photo albums or something similar. I'm sure there are some creative developers that could do this technology justice. Go Avalon!
