Circuit City Offers Fire Sale on UMD Movies

"Circuit City offers select UMD titles for $5 each. Sony's UMD movie format has been criticized in the past when it comes to movies. UMD movie titles have priced relatively high compared to their DVD counterparts and don't come with many of the DVD extras that are normally expected with a movie release. Almost a year ago, executives at Universal Pictures were lambasting the format. "It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb -- like Blu-ray," exclaimed one Universal exec. That exec’s thoughts on the Blu-ray standard haven’t quite panned out yet, but UMD movies are still floundering in the marketplace."
Consider this a PSA. Honestly, at $5, the UMD movies seem so much more reasonable. If Sony had priced the movies in this way from the beginning, I'd be willing to bet the the PSP would be a LOT more successful than it is today.
