ATI Releases New Card That Focuses On Multimedia

Posted by Andy Dixon in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 01:00 PM

"It's rare to see a rumor -- hell, even a roadmap -- pinpoint the timing of new releases quite so accurately, but our earlier report of ATI refreshing the middle and lower parts of its lineup turned out to be bang on. Following in the footsteps of the HD 5670, we have the Radeon HD 5450, which drags the entry price for DirectX 11 and Eyefinity multi-monitor support all the way down to $50."

It's rare that a graphics manufacturer releases a card aimed purely at multimedia and not gaming, but this is exactly what ATI are doing. Say hello to the HD 5450 which is aimed at people requiring a silent, yet powerful enough card to handle the multimedia requirements we now demand of our Media Center PCs. If that's not good enough news for you, then then price will be - $50.

The Radeon 5870 is a Pretty Fast Video Card

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 02:30 PM

"Two years ago, AMD’s ATI division decided to bow out of the game of building huge, hot chips that were expensive to make, ceding the high-end glory to Nvidia’s GT200 chip. That’s not to say AMD gave up on performance; it instead adopted the mantra of building the best performance GPU within a certain cost and power envelope. The Radeon HD 5800 series, originally code-named RV870, is the culmination of that approach."

If you're looking for some serious pixel pushing power, the newly released Radeon 5870 should be close to the top of your list. While some dual GPU configurations still sit on top, it seems as if ATI is starting to follow the trend that CPUs took 4-5 years ago. Instead of going the faster, hotter, hungrier route, requiring a nuclear reactor and wind tunnel to maintain, lean and mean is what's hot. The 5870 admittedly will gulp down a hefty 188 watts of power (Still less than the GTX 295s 289 watts!) when in full use, when idle, it putters along at a mere 27 watts. I am just glad that they are going this route. Performance is still important, but there are a lot of other factors coming into consideration, like power usage, noise, number of displays and physical size. The 5870 is definitely an ehtusiast card, but its legacy, as shown in the less models, will benefit us all.

Radeon 57xx's Are Stuck In The Middle With You

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 02:00 PM

"If the Radeon HD 5870 was characterized by roughly twice the computing resources as Radeon HD 4870, then the Radeon HD 5770 represents a halving of Radeon HD 5870. You’d think that’d yield something that looks a lot like the Radeon HD 4870 to which you’re already accustomed—and you’d be close to correct."

ATI is currently going through a release-fest right now, having just revealed their prized Radeon 5800 series. The 5700 series, while a little more pedestrian, seems to keep in line with what the market is offering right now. Both the 5770 and 5750 are priced to sit in the mid-range category of video cards and perform similar to those in the $125-$175 range, but they do offer some neat new bells and whistles such as triple-display Eyefinity goodness and bitstreaming. For those already with a good video card, I do not think it is enough to make you open your wallet, but those looking to build a new computer, this definitely would be the way to go. Tom's Hardware seems to think that these cards could be a viable option for an HTPC, especially with its bitstreaming capabilities, though the fan, albeit quietish, begs to differ. Me, I just hope that this potentially drives the price of their 4870s down, otherwise, the new cards only become an incremental upgrade over the previous generation.

AMD will not let ATI Rest on its Laurels

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 03:30 PM

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2009...eo_card_review/

"From top-to-bottom AMD had a successful generation of video cards thanks to its ATI Radeon Premium Graphics, providing competitive performance for the price, and an enjoyable gameplay experience across the entire scale. Apparently AMD’s "Sweet Spot" Strategy of scaling GPUs worked well for it in the previous generation, and it is using that philosophy to do it all over again with the new Radeon HD 5800 series."

AMD has been doing fairly well with ATI keeping up with NVidia in the Video card war, with each leapfrogging the other in predictable performance jumps. The latest attack is the ATI Radeon 5800 series of video cards. HardOCP got their hands on a 5870 model and it seems to put ATI firmly in the lead. Quite nice for a card that is supposed to start under $400. For the masses, of course, there is the 5850, but all the cards show friendly power consumption rates, especially considering the jump in performance they are giving. Now if they can only reverse the trend of the ever expanding video card enclosure, they have a customer in me. While I cannot say I upgrade my video card every 6 months, some of you might. Anyone looking forward to the 5800 goodness?
