New Cowon D3 Plenue Android PMP Reviewed

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android News" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/...p-review-video/

"This beaut is one of the few pocketable Android-based PMPs available today, offering up a gorgeous 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchpanel (800 x 480), dedicated media controls along the edges, Android 2.1, WiFi, 1080p video output, a built-in microphone and a battery good for up to 21 hours of use."

I wasn't familiar with Cowon before this. The D3 Plenue is an interesting Personal Media Player. It has some serious strengths like excellent audio quality and support for all kinds of formats including FLAC and OGG Vorbis. Unfortunately it also has some issues like no access to the Android Market and apparently a user interface that can take some getting used to. There may be a new firmware on the way to fix some problems and there is even the possibility of it getting Gingerbread so who knows what upgrades and fixes may be in store but check out the Engadget review for their take on the device as it is available now. Do you have one or want one? We would love to know your thoughts!

Cowon J3 PMP Impresses

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 01:30 PM

"The J3 certainly looks fetching, understated. While the S9 felt a bit hollow and the side panels – especially on the ‘chrome’ version – were fake plastic/metal, the J3 feels more substantial, yet not heavier. It has the exact same measurements, length- and width-wise, but it’s a bit thinner than its predecessor. It’s very pocketable."

While the iPod market gets updates every few months, other manufacturers have been busy making improvements to their own media players. Cowon may not be as well known in the Western world, but it offers a lot of good features to make considering it worthwhile. Why go with a company like Cowon when iPods are so easy to be had? Maybe you do not like iTunes. Maybe you prefer a different interface. Maybe you want support for a different range of codecs. Maybe you just want to try something different and stand out in a crowd. Whatever your reason, it is good to see that while the iPod does dominate, there is enough of the remaining market that some good competitors are out there.

Cowon D2+ Pleases, But Could Use an Update

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 05:00 PM

http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players...91.html?tag=box

"Cowon's original D2 MP3 player from 2007 quickly earned a reputation for outstanding sound quality, a long-lasting battery, and cutting-edge touch-screen technology. Two years later, the Cowon D2+ refines the audio quality and touch-screen interface that made the original model so compelling, and includes a reasonable price tag of $139 (8GB) and $179 (16GB)."

The 16 GB model is at about the same price point as 16 GB Zune's or iPod's, but as usual, there are trade-offs. Specifically, this device has a larger screen, expandable memory, and more features than the Zune or iPod, but it is significantly thicker and lacks some of the fancy interface touches. Probably the most important reason to consider the Cowon is its great sound quality.
