Are We All Digitally OCD Now?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 05:30 PM

"We are all OCD now. We do these things not just because digital filing gives us the satisfaction of cleaning without the unpleasant feeling of getting up from our chairs. It's because we're constantly confronting the onslaught of information, and our brains are trying to make patterns out of the randomness. We believe that if we just finish a list of every movie we want to see, we can finish that task, despite the fact that Rob Schneider is going to make more films."

This is a humour column, but there's some truth to the idea that sometimes we spend more time organizing and fretting away over the details of our digital collections than actually enjoying them. However, unlike the author of this column, I've always been detail-oriented and I appreciate creating digital order from digital chaos...it's almost soothing to me to see things organized properly. I don't think I could ever embrace digital chaos the way the author is suggesting - could you?

Improve Your Photo Archiving Kung-Fu

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 08:00 PM

"Digital photography has made it much easier to capture special moments in our lives. Folks who carry camera phones can always be ready to point and shoot everything from an impromptu family football game to a carefully staged portrait of folks in matching sweaters. There is no longer the need to worry about having only two shots left on a roll of film during the school play or coming back from the drive-through Fotomat or drugstore with fuzzy prints."

This article gives you the basics of what it takes to safely store and maintain your photo collection. Most of the tips are simple, and I doubt anyone reading this site would learn much from the article - but it might be exactly the sort of thing you should pass on to relatives and friends who are less tech-savvy. I'll take issue with one thing in this article: backing up to CDs or DVDs. Many of my home-burned CDs and DVDs are un-readable now; I only recommend backing up to other hard drives, or to the cloud. Optical media is too prone to decay and data loss - just don't do it. And given the prices of hard drives, there's really no smart reason to use optical discs.

Maximum PC Reviews Your Best Options For Photo-printing

Posted by Andy Dixon in "Digital Home Printing" @ 02:44 PM

"So, for those times when you want a print, what's the best way to get it? Is it worth paying $400 or more for a large-format printer, and then paying again and again for the ink? What about large-volume or professional online photo-printing services? Are they cost-effective, and can those prints measure up to a good-quality home printer? And how about those photo kiosks you find in places like Target and many grocery stores?"

Maximum PC have posted an article reviewing the various methods you can use to get a printed hard copy of that fantastic photo you took. They have compared the various options from home printers, online printing services and the kiosks you get in some of the major stores. It's an interesting read especially if perhaps you have only used one of the services in the past. I've never really printed many photos, and if I have, I always used my old photo printer which really only prints adequately in my eyes. I've always thought that if I wanted my prints to look good, then I should send them to a professional to get it done properly. Take a read and see if you agree with their conclusion.
