LG Set To Launch Flexible e-Paper Displays In April

Posted by Richard Chao in "Digital Home News" @ 11:47 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/29/...display-launch/

"LG has made no secret of its fondness for flexible e-paper, but those dreams became a reality today, with the announcement of a six-inch display that promises to "revolutionize the e-book market.""

Reading on e-paper is about to become a more paper like experience thanks to LG. LG has announced plans to make a flexible e-paper available to ODMs in China by the beginning of April. The flexible e-paper measures 0.7 millimeters thick, supports a resolution of 1024x768 and will bend up to 40 degrees.

Psst...Your TV is Kind of Dumb: Make it Smart

"It doesn't take a genius to appreciate the benefits of the new LG Smart TV Upgrader. With one little black box you can turn your current TV into a Web browsing, movie streaming, media sharing machine. Enjoy surfing the Internet from the comfort of your couch, check your FacebookTM and TwitterTM feeds on your flat-screen display and watch videos stored on your computer's hard drive without leaving the living room. The LG Smart TV Upgrader is all you need to make your TV a Smart TV, with all the online features of the latest models. If that's not brilliant, we don't know what is."

I heard about the LG SmartTV Upgrader ST600 during CES, and it looks like it's here - Best Buy in Canada is selling it for $149.99 CAD. From the looks of the specs and what it can do, it's much more sophisticated than your typical media streaming device - it's sort of like a Boxee Box in some ways (and about $50 cheaper to boot). It supports a wide variety of video file formats (MPEG2, MPEG4, DivX, DivXHD, MKV, TS TP, M4V, WMV) though I don't see ISO files on that list, which pretty much kills it for me. However, with a Web browser and a growing selection of applications, this could be just the ticket for making that TV of yours just a bit smarter.

Upgrading the Plain, Old Remote

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:30 PM

"Probably the best mash-up of the web and TV that we've seen so far is the upcoming Panasonic Viera line. These TVs run a version of Android, and Panasonic will be selling a companion Android tablet that can act as a remote control. (Note that the remote software is just an Android app, so it can run on Android phones, as well.) In addition to its remote capabilities, the tablet can do all the normal stuff that an Android tablet does."

This certainly looks slick and I really like the idea of just having an app on my phone that can act as a smart remote for all the TV's in my house. But usually I just want to change the channel or adjust the volume and the simplicity of a dedicated dumb remote is hard to beat. Check out the full article for more info on this interface as well as some other smart interfaces you may see in the future.

"Thanks to a couple of carefully planned slips over in South Korea, hardly anything about LG's CES 2011 is apt to take you fully by surprise. But if you just so happened to disconnect over the holidays, we'll break it all down below to ensure you remain firmly in the loop."

Engadget has a comprehensive list of what LG is showing at CES 2011 this year along with links to the relevant press releases. Everything from HDTV, blu-ray players, to set-top boxes is there and if you like LG technology then you will want to go see what they are planning to bring out in the near future.

All I Want For Christmas Is An Android Tablet

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Android News" @ 10:30 AM

"LG had initially said their tablet would be available as a Christmas stocking stuffing, but it appears it's been delayed until January's CES show now. It's no big deal really, but according to Bloomberg it's due to software issues."

This is not the first time that a product has not made its initial release date, though I wonder if missing the holiday season is a good decision as those who might like this delightful tablet may not want to wait and spend their gift money on a competitor, like, say, an iPad. With other Android tablets coming out, the claim that the delay is because of Android makes me wonder if the tablet really will be ready or reliable. It almost sounds like LG is working on their own layer on top of Android to try and differentiate themselves and are having problems making it a smooth experience. Whatever the problem is, it probably is best to wait until the reviews come out over this tablet to see if the added wait is worth it.

Plex Media Server Partners With LG To Integrate Closer With LG HDTV's

Posted by Andy Dixon in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/2010/09...layers/#more-17

"This is pretty amazing news! The Mac XBMC spin-off, Plex, has inked a deal with LG to bring their platform to NetCast enabled HDTVs and Blu-ray players in 2011. The company cites Plex's media server capabilities, ability to aggregate content from multiple sources (online and locally), and its drop dead simple and attractive UI as the main reason for Plex's inclusion into the NetCast offering. However, the way Plex will work on these TVs, according to the Plex Blog, is a cloud-based Plex App will be included in NetCast for accessing online content and services, which Plex is known for, and then have the ability to pull in additional content from "a Plex Media Server running anywhere in the house" (I'm guessing the app will be compatible with other UPnP media servers as well). I've got to be thinking this news must have the folks at Boxee and Apple (among others) spinning for the reason they both have expressed intentions of getting on the TV itself instead of assisting the TV with an adapter / media streamer device. FYI, Plex Media Server will be coming to other OSes, besides Mac OS X, in the near future (the LG rep in the demo below says a Windows version of Plex Media Server should be out by November)."

LG has announced a deal with Plex that will see the XMBC like media server included in future netcast enabled LG HDTV's. Integrated media servers and TV's are something I expect to see more and more of now as manufacturers start to move towards a more centralised hub for entertainment. Whether that is something that we want as customers remains to be seen, but I can certainly see the logic for doing so.

Gizmodo Tries Out the LG BD390

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 12:30 PM

http://gizmodo.com/5255151/lg-bd390...orget-about-blu

"Nowadays, a test of a so-called Blu-ray player involves so much beyond just playing a damn Blu-ray movie that the name "Blu-ray player" is a bit ridiculous. Nowhere is that more true than in the BD390, which tonight got an upgrade so that in addition to the Netflix and YouTube it already serves up, it also distributes CinemaNow video, and sniffs out music and video on your network to play, too. The BD390 is a great disc-playing supplement to a frill-less cable-co DVR, though many of its streaming-video perks overlap with those from TiVo or Media Center PCs."

Gone are the days of a home theater setup with 50 different components. With all the horsepower behind a Blu-ray player, its no surprise that manufacturers are finding ways to make use of that processing power with added features. The LG BD390 is among one of these value-added Blu-ray players that handles Netflix, YouTube and various other streaming video services. It does this through an integrated 802.11n connection so there's no extra wires, antennas or other clutter coming out of the back of your home theater setup. It works great and there's only a few limitations, but it looks like it'd serve well enough to be your only connection to your TV aside from your cable box if you have one. I personally think media center PCs are more powerful, but those who want a simpler appliance to use, higher-end Blu-ray players like the BD390 might be more suited to you.
