Build a Better Mouse and the World Will Beat a Path to Your Door

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 02:00 PM

http://lifehacker.com/5931795/five-...st-desktop-mice

"Picking the best mouse to use is a pretty personal decision—it often comes down to taste and how the mouse feels under your hands, but there are definitely some stand-out models that most of us would recommend to friends if they asked us."

A lot of people are on the tablet craze where they touchy touchy their data, a lot of people still use a mouse as one of their main interface to a computer. A typical computer comes with a mouse that functions, but tends to be very basic. For those that use computers for a living, spending some coin on a more advanced mouse can make a huge difference in productivity and comfort. While the list LifeHacker provides tends to be more gaming focused, many of them function very well as desktop mice, and with extra buttons, it can make things like web surfing much easier. I am partial to the MX Revolution myself, but preference is very personal.

What surprises me is that Microsoft is missing from this list. I am a staunch Logitech fan, using their hardware for most peripherals I have, I must admit that Microsoft also puts out some very good mice and keyboards. What works best for you if you want to upgrade? Go to a brick and mortar store and see how each fits your hand. Reviews are great, but we are talking about a device that you are likely to spend years with.

The Logitech M600 is a Touchy Mouse

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/02/lo...uch-mouse-m600/

"With the Logitech Touch Mouse M600, things are set to improve, making mousing feel like second nature. You are able to scroll, swipe and surf regardless of where your fingertips rest on the mouse, and it does not matter whether you are a southpaw or not."

There are Touch people, Touchpad people and there are Mice people. Okay, there are probably some TrackBall people around, and TrackPoint/AccuPoint people too. Having grown up in front of desktops, I find mice the most efficient way of navigating my computing. For tablets and phones, sure, touch is great, but it is the mouse I crave when I want to deal with lots of information. But with Logitech's latest creation, why not get the best of both worlds? Touch mice have been around for a few years in several incarnations. I remember one of Logitech's earliest attempts 8 years ago with the v500, though that did not support multi-touch. The only problem is that I do not know if I will feel comfortable looking like I'm fondling my mouse while I whisk through all that data.

A New Take On Mouse Design

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 06:00 AM

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/revi...laser-mouse.ars

"To use the mouse, simply place your hand over it. The swiveling base and higher design naturally adjust themselves to fit your hand, and it bends slightly back and forth as you work. It's hard to describe, but in practice it's almost startlingly comfortable; my wife and I both found ourselves using it with our laptops very quickly. The mouse is wireless, and it uses a micro transceiver that unobtrusively plugs into one of your system's USB ports. We tested the mouse on both PCs and Macs, and it worked great on both."

From time to time you come across a new way of thinking about a standard computer peripheral. Case in point: Smartfish Technologies has patented a new pivot system (ErgoMotion) which they have integrated into a new mouse design. The new design allows the mouse to pivot in almost any direction. The net impact is the mouse will allow your hand and wrist to assume a "Dynamic Neutral Position" as you move the pointer across the desktop. Smartfish believes the design is ergonomically advantageous, and has quite an impressive technical team behind the design. A video on the Smartfish website gives you more details on exactly how this works in practice. The company has both a notebook and desktop version of the mouse, and also has an ergonomic keyboard that sports a very flexible bevy of possible positions. If you read comments from people who have used the mice you will find a mixture of results, which is not surprising given that the new design may take some getting used to. If you have ever suffered from a repetitive strain injury, like I have, then you'll appreciate that getting used to a device like this might be well worth it. evoMouse: Let Your Fingers Do the Mousing

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/03/celluon-evomouse/

"Who needs mice anymore when you have the ultimate tool at your disposable: your finger. The folks over at celluon have recently demonstrated a new mouse that intends to replace all mice in the future. Called the evoMouse, this device is anything but a mouse. "

Tired of cupping that mouse in your hand? Feeling restricted by the size of your touchpad? The evoMouse looks like an interesting way to go about directing your trusty little pointer around the computer screen. The video makes it look like you can get rid of the mouse and mousepad, going bareback right on your own desktop. A little different yes, and your fingertip may end up hating you, but useful nonetheless. If such a device were integrated directly into a laptop, it might prove to be very convenient with being able to use a touchpad or "mouse" when you are able. If the price is not too high, I would not mind trying one out.

Logitech Releasing Couch-Friendly Mouse, the M515

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 03:43 PM

http://www.trustedreviews.com/perip...-Living-Room/p1

"Couch surfing means different things to different people. Some see it as a way of travelling the world without ever having to shell out money for a hotel room, while others see it as a way of checking their emails while never leaving the comfort of their leather recliner. Logitech's new wireless mouse, the M515, is squarely aimed at the latter, though we're sure some of the former would enjoy this device should they find themselves in a house belonging to the latter. With the advent of smart TVs, for better or worse, the way we connect to them has become something of a hot topic. Logitech's solution is to produce a mouse designed to work specifically on soft furnishings so you don't need a mouse mat or hard surface for it to work properly."

This isn't exactly new technology - we've had mice that can work on any surface for years - but this is an optimised approach that makes it a bit more appropriate for couch-bound use. Ultimately I feel like this isn't the best approach though - the Lenovo Multimedia Remote would probably be a better solution. What sort of input device do you use from your couch if you have a connected device?

CES 2011: The Smartfish Ergonomic Keyboard and Mouse

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 03:30 PM

I posted about Smartfish a few weeks ago because I liked the concept of their keyboards and mice. As someone who spends far too many hours typing on a keyboard, any potential technology that can save some wear and tear on my arms/hands/shoulders has my attention. I got a brief demo of the product at CES, but since I'm not down with the whole "wired keyboard" thing, I might be checking out their Apple-store-only, Bluetooth-based model when the time comes.

And the Mouse Came Back, the Very Next Day

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/25/...-mice-reviewed/

"Many tech pundits have already started drafting an obituary of the computer mouse like the one above, but let's be clear: we think the death of the mouse is greatly exaggerated. In fact, we're so convinced the mouse isn't dead that we've been testing some of the best on the market for the last couple of months. Click on below to find out why we think the lowly mouse has more than a few good years left, and which ones out there deserve your attention."

I do not know if the mouse will ever fully go away, but I can certainly see other user interfaces eating away at its marketshare. Yes, I am thinking of touch, but I also believe that voice recognition, while still very clunky, can also play a role in our future in interacting with technology. Mice are a fact of life in computing today, and the classic mouse + keyboard combination is difficult to beat for a lot of productivity work. As for mice, well, I am a Logitech man. Always have been and always will be. The basic shape they use works well with me, and I have yet to find anything that works as smoothly for me as their MX series. Anyone have a favourite mouse that they are still clinging on to and hoping it will never fail?

The Microsoft Mouse 2.0 Project

Posted by Eriq Cook in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.on10.net/blogs/larry/A-L...ehind-Mouse-20/

"Microsoft's Mouse 2.0 project is an interesting look at the next step for pointing devices in five completely different versions of multitouch mice. One of the things I liked about the Mouse 2.0 news is that we put our cards on the table at a very early stage and asked what the public thought. Speak up, we're listening."

Here's your chance to give your feedback on upcoming input devices and make a difference in what we'll be using in about 5 years :) I personally think touch-sensitive may be a little difficult to get used to, but perhaps they could improve the concept better. What are your thoughts on the concepts shown?

Watch Microsoft's Multi-Touch Mice In Action!

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.on10.net/blogs/larry/Thi...our-Next-Mouse/

"Today at the User Interface Software and Technology Conference, Microsoft will show five new mouse prototypes that combine normal mousing with multitouch controls. Here is a video that gives you a brief introduction to each of the controls."

A video has surfaced that demonstrates Microsoft's foray into multi-touch mice and how they can be used in different applications. The demos are somewhat interesting, but I think that it is the finger gestures that they demonstrate that could have the most potential in real world applications. Watching the hand do awkward things like pinching and stretching on a mouse looks painful to me, and not something that I would relish doing repeatedly. And while multi-touch actions are useful, putting those on a mouse seems counter-intuitive to me, since it is a step removed from the actual object you're interacting with; why not just do those actions right on the screen itself? Flicks and twists though, look much more natural, and I could see those being more quickly accepted. Anyone going to rush out the moment these, or something like them, go on sale?

HP Vivienne Tam Wireless Mouse Valentine's Giveaway

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 09:15 PM

Valentine's Day is only a few days away, and if you're the typical guy you probably haven't gotten anything for your wife/girlfriend/significant other. Digital Home Thoughts is here to help! HP has given us three of these very feminine Vivienne Tam wireless optical mice to give away. With Valentine's Day being so close, I figured it was time for a giveaway! I won't be able to ship them to the winners in time for the 14th, but you can print out the above photo and tell that special someone that they won one!

OK, here's the contest: post a reply telling me how your met your wife/girlfriend/significant other. So as not to exclude the single people out there (believe me, I remember what it was like), if you'd like to give this mouse to a close friend, go ahead and tell me how you met them. And hey, you never know what kind of sparks a fashionable mouse might create! The contest will close Friday night, around 10pm (GMT -7), and the three winners (chosen at random from among all posted entries) will each receive one mouse each.

UPDATE:Thanks for all the great stories everyone - I enjoyed reading them. And thanks for entering the contest! The three winners are: Dyvim, lynnroth, and srsabu. Each winner has been contacted via private message and they have 7 days to claim their prize. Have a very happy Valentine's Day, one and all!
