Thin and Flexible Batteries Closer to Reality

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/10/...c-radical-batt/

"NEC first announced its super-thin Organic Radical Battery (or ORB) technology a full five years ago, but it's now finally back with what it describes as the first "practical" prototypes of the batteries. While these new batteries are about twice as thick as NEC's first such units, they're still only 0.7 mm thin, and are apparently much more reliable while also delivering 1.4 times more output (specifically, a capacity of 5mAh)."

This isn't a technology you are going to see in your next laptop. Instead the focus is on thin and flexible, so think things like flexible epaper displays, etc. Still since they are only calling this the first practical prototype, I wouldn't hold my breath either.

NEC CRV-43, A Monitor with Beautiful Curves

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 01:00 PM

"The unique NEC CRV43 curved display provides a much wider field of view and greater dynamic range with its double WGXA resolution (32:10 aspect ratio). The user's taskbar is extended natively and setup is made easy to configure with one input. These features make it an ideal solution for simulation, digital imaging and command & control."

WOW! The curvature sure makes this super-wide beast more usable, but it is hard to tell from the picture if the curve is enough to make the difference. I've got two 22's side by side with one serving as the primary and one as a secondary. I've got the secondary to the side and it is angled about 30 degrees for optimal viewing. While that works great for me and is significantly cheaper, I see this as being ideal for an truly immersive gaming experience.

NEC Netbook Ready to Lighten Your Wallet With its Netbook

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.trustedreviews.com/lapto...e-VS-Netbook/p1

"If the Asus 'seashell' Eee PC 1008HA is still a bit too big and heavy for you, NEC's VersaPro UltraLite Type VS might be the netbook you're looking for. At 29.9mm to 15.8mm it's a slightly more pronounced 'wedge' than the 1008HA, albeit thinner at the pointy end, but at 725g it's light enough to give Asus a decent kick in the proverbial."

NEC has tossed out a featherlight netbook from their labs for those who are extremely conscious about carry-on weight. The features on the VersaPro UltraLite Type VS are mostly pretty pedestrian, though the higher resolution screen is appreciated. I'm convinced that the 64GB SSD is a true SSD and not a part SSD, part SHDC combo. I cannot see any other possible reason why they would charge ¥176,000 for it. That that price, you could buy three or four regular netbooks!
