Sony Rumoured to be Working on 3G-enabled Digital Camera?

Posted by Lee Yuan Sheng in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 04:00 PM

http://photorumors.com/2011/03/10/r...-3g-connection/

"Gdgt reported a rumor that Sony is working on a digital camera with integrated 3G connection. This will not be another smart phone, but rather a Cybershot camera that will allow instant upload of images online via an integrated 3G connection."

I have mentioned that I would like to see a connected camera in 2011, and Sony (unfortunately in my case) might just be the first to the market with one. I am wondering how well it will sell once it comes out: Will it be taken hostage by tyrannical North American carriers, just like every other device that sports a cellular radio? I hope not, because this is an area where cameras can stand to innovate, and having a non-traditional obstacle is not going to help things.

What is Nikon "Q"?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 12:00 PM

http://nikonrumors.com/2010/09/17/w...n-q-part-2.aspx

The rumours are starting to mount: it's looking like Nikon is going to be announcing something big at Photokina, but the speculation is it will be simply an announcement - no product yet. So what is it? Well, Nikon Rumors is guessing that it's going to be Nikon's mirrorless EVIL camera - and given that the "F" mount lenses are what Nikon DSLRs use, calling the new system's lens mount the "Q" makes a certain amount of sense. But in looking at the image above, I'm struck by how much the grip seems to stick out - that's not something you tend to see on EVIL/DILC cameras. On the other hand, it might be part of Nikon's design to make them easier to hold - and if the rest of the camera is quite thin, it might work out OK.

I'm honestly quite excited about whatever Nikon has cooking with their mirrorless camera; I'm an unabashed fan of Nikon and the image quality of their DSLRs, and if I could get near-DSLR image quality in a camera I could fit in my jacket pocket, well, sign me up!

Rumored Price for HP Slate Looks Good

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/19/...-cpu-confirmed/

"Seemingly obtained from HP itself, the €400 ($546) price tag positions the Slate a notch above netbooks and bodes well for the expectation that it'll undercut the iPad's entry level pricing. Straight currency conversations are inadvisable in such situations, so we'll just have to wait until official stickers for the iPad in Europe are known or HP announces US prices for the Slate."

If this pricing holds true, I think I'll be going with this over the iPad. I know you can make the argument either way, but I prefer having a full OS and the ability to do what I want on the device over the easier to use, but more locked down environment of the iPad. Plus, since this runs Windows, I'll hopefully be able to tether this to my Droid without much trouble.

Straight from the Rumour Mill: Nikon's D700

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 03:42 PM

http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/...-d700-broc.html

"After the disappointing fake Nikon D90 comes a much more plausible looking Nikon D700 rumor. These shots are supposedly from a leaked print brochure for the new body, and show the D700 to be a full frame, 12.1 megapixel, $3000 camera. This is the same CMOS sensor as used in the top-of-the-line D3, which should bring the amazing low light performance (up to ISO 25600) the new Nikons are getting famous for. Inside you'll find 14bit A/D conversion and 16 bit image processing courtesy of Nikon's EXPEED processor, 51 focus points, a single Compact Flash slot (come on Nikon. Switch to SD already), and a tough magnesium body."

Given the very significant pricing gap between the D300 ($1800, body only) and the D3 ($5000, body only), it's not surprising to see rumours about a "middle-ground" camera that has a full-frame sensor, but lacks some of the high-end features of the D3. I'd put this one in the "probable" category of rumours.
