The Smartphone Coaster: Shiny, Simple, Affordable

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Accessories" @ 08:00 AM

If you've got more than a couple of gadgets, you've probably come up with places to put them - but it might not be an ideal one. Back in the day, PDAs came with cradles, so when you weren't using your PDA you'd have it in the cradle charging. Cradles exist for some devices now - mostly MP3 players at this point - but they're increasingly rare when it comes to smartphones, largely because the sync/charge ports are rarely on the bottom any more (the iPhone is an exception of course). So where do you put your gadgets? Enter the Smartphone Coaster from newPCgadgets.com, a simple but effective product. Read more...

Flexicord Mini Synch and Charge Cable Reviewed

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

We are approaching cable nirvana. Micro USB is becoming fairly standard for charging and synching lots of devices, meaning that we can now leave our giant bundle of cables at home when we travel. This also means that charging cables are pretty much just a commodity item and we just go for what's cheap. So I was pretty excited when I found the Flexicord Mini since it looked to bring something else to the table and really didn’t ask much in return.

A Simple Addition for AudioEngine A2 Speakers: The DS1

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 08:00 AM

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of AudioEngine speakers. My first exposure to their products was the A5 speakers - and I loved them. Fantastic sound, great value. Then I reviewed their A2 speakers, and was equally impressed with the impressive sound the tiny wonders could kick out. When I built my digital wall, I went with an AudioEngine A8 sub-woofer, and it's killer - literally, it put holes in my hardwood floor. But also sounded great, so I kept it. Earlier this year I went out and bought two pairs of A2 speakers because I didn't want any of my main office computers to suffer from an audio inferiority complex. So it's safe to say that I'm biased in favour of AudioEngine products, because I spend my own money on them. There's no better reviewers endorsement than that, right?

Because I have multiple sets of A2 speakers and listen to music in front of them for many hours a day, any product that enhances that experience has my attention. The AudioEngine DS1 ($29.99 USD MSRP) stands (pictured above) are a pair of silicone rubber speaker stands designed for the A2 speakers. Because the A2 speakers are so small, the sonic sweet spot can be hard to hit depending on how close you are to your computer. If the speakers a couple of feet away from you, they'll sound great - but if you have them right next to a laptop that you hunch over, the sweet spot is going to be generated at your chest-level rather than at your ears. The DS1s raise the A2's upward at a 15 degree angle, changing the angle enough to move that sweet spot. Read more...

The iZel: A Digital Device Holder

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 08:30 AM

The iZel is a small, portable digital device holder (stand) that allows you to easily watch video content in comfort while on a plane, train etc. All you need is a surface to put the iZel on. In the video I test it out with a variety of devices: Zunes, smartphones, an iPod Touch, etc. When I travel, I like to load up my Zune with a movie or two, but I end up holding it in my hand to watch it - not very ideal. The iZel offers a solution to that problem, although depending on the screen size of your device, and how good your eyesight is, watching a video at tray-table height might be difficult. The iZel is made of very durable materials, so it should last a very long time, making it worth the price tag in my opinion (though not everyone agrees). I'll likely be travelling by plane in September, so I'll get a chance to use it in a real-world situation. In the meantime, I'm going to use it as a holder for my cellphone-du-jour, the Samsung Jack. The iZel can be purchased for $24.95 from Amazon.com. [Affiliate]

iZel Universal Device Stand

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.myizel.com/

"The iZel is a totally unique and innovative way to support your device for hands free use. Its remarkable design supports a wide range of the world's most popular devices. It has a clever method for adapting its shape to landscape or portrait orientations and it is easily adjusted to position your screen for the optimal viewing angle. Best of all, it folds flat and travels easily. The iZel's durable construction is made possible by using a sophisticated slip-resistant elastomer that helps to keep your device in its place and looking new. Use the iZel when you want to watch a video, make a hands-free call, monitor your email, surf the web, or to simply use your device as a digital picture frame."

This is certainly one way to go about things, but it seems a bit larger than what I want to carry around. Personally, I keep a few paperclips in my bag and just make myself a quick stand on the few occasions that I need one.
