Poyomi Photobooks - Your Digital Images Brought Home

Posted by Angelina Purpura in "Digital Home Printing" @ 09:00 AM

Poyomi Photobooks are a simple and elegant solution to the problem most of us have these days: What do I do with all of my digital photos? My own Flickr account alone currently has nearly 22,000 photos, and will surely exceed that soon. I love every photo I've taken, but not enough to print them all, and it's difficult to justify the time of moving all of my favourites to a USB drive and going to the photo store at the mall. But I do wish that I could have copies of some of my more precious images, to show my friends or reminisce over. What better way to order a physical copy of your photos than though your computer/the Internet, where most of them are likely to be stored? Better still, Poyomi allows to to print them directly into scrapbook form, saving you yet another time-consuming process. And for as little as $5.99 for a 20 page book, Poyomi has made it quite affordable too. Read more...

CloudCanvas: HTML5-based Digital Media Editor

Posted by Reid Kistler in "Digital Home Software" @ 01:00 PM

http://lifehacker.com/5594297/

"If you've been interested in using a web-based image editor but you've found them slow or too tied-down to plugins you might not have access to everywhere you want to work, CloudCanvas is a fast HTML5-based editor that frees you from plugins."

If you are the creative type, and would like to try out a HTML5-based editor, CloudCanvas seems worth taking a look at - particularly as they have a "Design Competition" that may allow you to win one of three $500 awards (submissions are due by Sep 12, 2010). Still new enough to be called a "Beta," the CloudCanvas site provides a basic introduction to their features and underlying technology, but for now it is largely learn on your own: at the time checked their Documentation was sparse (an outline of Menu Items), and the "Discussion Forum" had precisely 0 (as in Zero...) posts, and only a single, very brief, FAQ. Still, I was able to open the editor in both Firefox and Opera, and create a very simple "Drawing" in each: those who are more adept at using image editors will probably be able to grasp CloudCanvas without too much difficulty.

Aviary Web-Based Image Editing Now Free

Posted by Reid Kistler in "Digital Home Software" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2010/0...ools-turn-free/

"Aviary, the cool web-based suite of image editing tools -- and more -- now costs nothing to use. Thanks to a new round of funding, full access to the web apps with the funky bird names no longer costs $24.99."

Jay Hathaway, at DownloadSquad.com, picked up on Aviary's new status ("Free!") from TechCrunch, and both sites compare Aviary favorably with Adobe's web version of Photoshop. A visit to Aviary's website shows a number of available tools, most of which are shown in the menu capture above, along with many samples of work done using these, over 70 tutorials, an active community, and a regularly updated blog. Registration was easy, and provided essentially immediate access to the tools. The couple of tools I sampled seem well presented, with apparently powerful options, but - at least for myself - these would require a fair amount of tutorial time to learn how to properly use. I will stick with Photoshop Elements and Paint.net for the time being, but if you like playing around with images, Aviary is certainly worth a look!
