When Bigger Is Not Better: Review Of Four Nettops

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...-q180,3231.html

"Today, we have four machines from as many different vendors. Our focus this time around is more on the products themselves, particularly now that we know how the hardware inside each performs (don't worry, we're running plenty of benchmarks here, too). Each box has its own unique focus. Some aim to squeeze desktop-like performance into a diminutive enclosure, and others minimize physical dimensions while pushing performance a notch higher compared to previous-generation models."

Laptops, tablets and smartphones are all the craze. Who wants a big boxy computer that stubs your toes when you are surfing the Internet fantastic? For those of us who still like a desktop kind of setup, these mini-pcs can provide a lot of benefits. Whether they act as an HTPC, office computer, a computer for the kids, or whatever else, space can often be at a premium. Historically, I have seen many of these small machines compromise performance in many ways, however, its impressive to see one of them sport a Core i5. It will not boost your bitcoin mining operation, but for regular use, and possibly even some light gaming, it's great to see these tiny wonders pack a punch!

Anandtech Reviews The Zotac ZBOX Blu-Ray HD-ID34

Posted by Andy Dixon in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 03:00 PM

"Zotac has made quite a name for itself with its mini-PC products. The ZBOX offering aims at bringing an affordable Blu-Ray equipped HTPC option to the masses for some time now. Look no further than our review of the Zotac ZBOX HD-ID11 to see what the fuss has been about."

This is an interesting box from Zotac which would quite easily fit in with your existing A/V equipment connected to the TV. It's quite a unique device which out of the box will play blu-ray discs, or even rip them to an external disk drive to allow you to store them on a server or NAS box, or it can also play these movies remotely acting as a streaming media center. There is also one other trick up it's sleeve that Anandtech mention and that is: 'Since the unit ships devoid of an OS you can even install Windows Home Server if you so choose'. I'm not sure what to make of that one! However, there does seem to be some limits to what it can do with the Intel Atom/ION GPU powering it which seems to let it down. That said, I like the form factor, I like the idea's behind it and it could make a good device for the bedroom, or the kids room.
